Hello everyone,

I think my topics this week should be called "dumb things people do with coins".

I bought these three today framed ... Yes framed... With glue.

1) any thoughts on authenticity? If they are fakes I think they are good fakes. In particular, I am curious about the Janus.

2) attribution please... I am terrible at these... And the time I spend is 100X + member response time here....

3) they were glued in a frame... Any suggestions on removing the glue from the reserves assuming it's worth doing...

Thank you all!

Approx 25 mm 9.71 g

@roma, a couple thoughts for you. I understand the link among these three coins is that they were all framed for presentation purposes. However, it really is much easier on us to give each coin the proper attention if you split out each coin into its own thread. Thx.

As far as removing the old adhesive, you could try soaking in plain water first and if that doesn't work move on to pure acetone (not nail polish remover). You may discover though that under the adhesive the coin is toned differently.

Thanks Spence... Done and done! I thought they would be commonly themed or easier to attribute in context. But you're right.

Certainly authentic.

First resembles Marcus Aurelius, but I'm no Roman expert. Others will contribute, I'm sure. Providing a close-up of the remaining obverse legend would be helpful.

I think I can see IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS on the second. Perhaps Gordian III?

Providing a shot of the reverse of the Janus would be helpful. Is it a galley prow?

If these three coins came from the same hoard, then there would be a good reason to link them. However, my guess is that someone picked out three "cool" coins from various time periods in ancient Rome's history and framed them for presentation. Thank you for splitting them out--by you choosing similar names to the threads, they will remain connected in that way.
