Thinking about bidding on this. Seller's pics. It's one I need. I see the scratches on the reverse, which I'm not nuts about. I looked at the "s" and am wondering about placement. I researched some and saw some examples with the "s" in that position, but I'm wary of it being added. Thinking about bidding up to $90. Thoughts?

I feel ya on choosing a proper Indian cent on budget. To me, the mintmark looks ok to my eyes as I don't see anything obvious that screams added. As to grade, I put it at a decent F-15, possible VF-20 and I don't think those slightly disagreeable reverse scratches would be severe enough to details it. But your call on if you want it bad enough, to me not that bad overall...

Like I say - if I goes under $90 I'm going after it, I think. Greysheet puts a F-15 at $136 and a VF-20 at $143, so hardly any grade difference in this condition. Looks like F-15 to me. Thanks for your opinion.

So here's the hook - shipping is $10 on the F-15. Or I could just buy this one outright for $154 with shipping included. VF-35? Wonder if acetone would clean some of that oily looking crud off of it.

you asked...take it from me buy a certified PCGS ANACS or NGC example you pay a little more but when time comes or goals change you can move that coin effortlessly. There's thousands of these out there problem free its one worth paying a little more for certified. AU examples sell for under 300 bucks.

Something to think about, for certain. Thanks for the input. Kills me that I had a PCGS 64-RB back in the day, but went through a divorce and it got sold. Oh well...

Original coin - might make F-12.

I agree that the first one grades F-15. The second one I would grade as VF-25 or VF-30 but it may have been cleaned at some point. I settled for a VG-8 example for my set (PCGS) for $80. There are plenty of nice ones out there, have patience and get one that is certified.

Too late - I won the auction - total cost including shipping and tax - $91. Came out of Vermont, so I had to pay state sales tax there. Crazy. That said, I feel OK at that price as that's where I was willing to go on this one.
MisterT, I'm curious about VF25 on the second coin - I would have thought VF30 at a minimum. VF35 may be a bit optimistic, though. Reverse better than Obverse, but I know Obverse carries the weight. Still has a couple of diamonds and full liberty.

Price OK, but not a bargain.

The second one you posted looks to be cleaned, to me. VF35 sharpness
If I had to choose I'd take the first one, if I was just looking for a nice example to put in my Dansco.
I still don't have a 1909-S, last coin I need to finish the book; can never find one that's affordable and not ugly.

Yeah, NumismaticsFTW, you may be right. Got the fire in my belly. This is a coin for a folder collection. Most of the lower grade 1908-S coins I see are pretty awful. When I saw this clean, unmolested example I figured $90 total was a reasonable bid - wouldn't have gone higher. What ticked me off was that I saw this morning a 1870 in XF/AU went for $145. Nice coin - if I had seen that one I would have spent my money there. I just missed it.

would be interested in seeing the scratches on this one when you get it in hand. looks like it was dragged across some surface. it hard to tell how prominent they are from the photos. that being said, my purchase standards had changed from when I started collecting compared to later on in years where I would now buy keys/semi-keys in the highest grade I could afford. these are the coins that long term will yield the greatest return if and when you decide to sell.
original posted coin - I would all a lot higher than other grades on this one. overall I think it can go as high as VF25 with that reverse and rounded cheek which is not showing much wear. I think at worst it would be VF20 especially looking at several graded at 20/25 and every bit as nice, except the scratches, as the 25's I found
like paralyse I would prefer this one to the VF35 for that price I think you got a good deal and may be surprised if you decided to slab it.
