1 The plastic is so scratched that it detracts from the look of the coins.
2 The case is not a mint product so really has no extra value in it's current condition.
3 The case may be partly to blame for the discoloration.
4 It looks like someone pushed the coins into the holder with a dirty thumb.
5 The coins will always be ugly in the case.

MR Tjames88, BREAK OPEN THAT CASE !

If they all look good, you're done.
Otherwise......

(VIEWER ADVISORY- if you are offended by sympathetic cleaning of coins, turn back now or be blinded by unholy work).
If you ever found a coin in the mud and washed it off, you may pass.
If you ever licked your thumb and wiped a dirty old coin to see the date (except the metal-detectorists who rub coins with their muddy gloves), you may pass.
If you ever used hawthorns or similar items to get schmutz out of large-cent lettering, you too may pass.
If you know NGC uses dip in some instances in "conserving", you pass (CCN report).

I have several hundred "colourful" cents from 1940+ that were stored for up to 60 years in various containers. Going through many of them during the pandemic, I found the only thing to do to an ugly stained cent that may have colour is to rub it with your t-shirt, between your thumb and forefinger for 5 seconds or so each side. Voila !!

In your case, the type 2 coin is a very common type and the spot on the obverse kills it's value. This is the coin to give the first t-shirt rub. It can only get better. The type 3 is also a very common one. It may enhance what looks to be a bit of colour in the centre. Try the t-shirt on these two. If they do not look better, then I will send your 5 red ones of both types, no charge- I had multiple original rolls of each. Since type 4 has a much higher value than the others, it will be up to you whether to continue on it and type 1 after the test on the other two. I know, heresy. I got all mine at one cent so .....

I have the same set, in the same container (somewhere). Purchased in the late 70's for less than $5 US. One of these days I'll go into the attic and take a pic. BTW when I bought it the coins were all MS Red.

Better pics but still blurry, so with your pics in the order you show them you have type 3 , type 4 , type 2 and then type 1 a keeper set till you find better ones.

Or just leave and enjoy as is. What is to be enhanced by pulling them out of the package and rubbing them down? Personally I don't care what the coin, unless its a completely common placeholder, I wouldn't rub anything with anything. Just accept that they are what they are and enjoy them.

personally I would leave them in that case.

a little bit of "rainbowing" in that case doesn't take anything away from it for me.

It took me a looooooong time to get all four varieties in the wild.

Those look nice and how did they get that colour? Did they start out like the ones I have or do all of them change somewhat to that tone?I'm not sure about the cleaning part I don't know if I would clean them. I only started collecting about a year ago but I don't feel comfortable cleaning them I have kind of a hard time dipping any of the coins I have. Don't get me wrong I would like to clean them but I am even wary of the dipping process. I don't even want to dip them I guess because I don't fully know how yet and I don't want to ruin them further, but all of the colours in the tone of the coins are nice and on close inspection the coins are not pitted in any way or the colours don't are not an ugly brown more red, turquoise and looks like red- purple. The dark spot on the one coin is dark blue/ green. I think I will take them out of the holder though and switch to something else if they get really ugly I'll attempt to clean them but probably not even then I think I'd rather just have them like that. Also, what type of camera are you using I need a good one and excellent pictures by the way. I need a good camera I am in the process but not sure on ones that are good for coins I'd hate to spend that type of cash to get a bad camera. Thanks for all the feedback it's very helpful otherwise I just get mixed information online. Thanks again

In case the different font didn't register, ( I found the only thing to do to an ugly stained cent that may have colour), I guess I should have underlined ugly-stained cent.

Never ever ever dip a cent ! It goes ugly orange and it's as good as dead. Nothing more than water. Dip was made for removing tarnish from silver.

I use an old Nikon Coolpix camera. With it's software, I adjust the sharpness, then the contrast and brightness to look more like what you really see (but never the colour).

The colour on coins comes from whatever they are subject to, mostly air, or anything else they contact. A lot is from people touching it in circulation and then being stored a long time. Plastics used up to about 20 years ago and other methods of storage were not ideal; I use plastic drawers meant for nuts and bolt to keep cents and nickels in since the 1960's.
Some of the coins I found in my pile of stained coins(part below) look beautiful, most are dogs.

This coin was enclosed in a 2x2 for over 50 years - the tape tore at the top and made a red one green. The "Hanging 3" variety was called a flag back then. Also, nobody had a good home stapler in the 60's. Not a bad reverse...

The obverse is ugly, fingerprint, tsk, tsk.

I did nothing to this one. It was kept just like the others so you never know what may appear.

Put yours in 2x2's to keep them from changing.

Still those are nice coins. The colours are nice but what are the chances it gets that way it's just stored wrong or are they considered damaged. I also have a few nice coins that would have been blemish free otherwise especially on a rare date. Also they will stop changing in a 2 x 2 I didn't know that. I thought once it started it just continued until it's brown.

These are very nice but it often seems to me that the rainbow toning assignment has as much to do with how the coin is photographs as what it actually looks like in hand. How many of these are as striking looking in hand as they are in these photos?

Not sure mine look terrible in pictures but when you look at them in person they look great. I noticed with pictures though they tend to look off all depends on the angle. In person you can actually see all the different colours properly but I'm in the process of getting another camera still waiting. But once I get it I'll open up the holder they came in and transfer them into something for the longer term. Do they even grade coins like these? Anyway I will be transferring them soon
