Hi There,

Rather new to the coin collecting.

Came across this coin in a bag of old coins at my parents house. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Apologies if the picture is not great, first attempt at posting.

John's link will help you a lot. Looks to have been minted at the Heaton mint as that is the H below Queen Victoria.

Thanks for the speedy responses.

Found it rather bizarre to come across this coin in a bag that largely just held old pennies and various other old UK coins.

Would there be any significance to the fact it was minted at the Heaton mint?

Not really, no. Heaton Mint made a lot of coins for the colonies. As you can see from the table on the page John1 linked to above, 1897 coins were struck in both London and Heaton, and the mintages from Heaton and from London are about the same. Their catalogue values are the same, as can be seen on the NGC database.

In terms of value, it's probably about a US$30 coin.

Incredible to think that a little coin like this is worth 30$ today.

Really appreciate the help here. Now to go see if I have any other gems in my coin bags

$30 seems a bit on the high side to me. I do buy these sort of coins and in that condition, on eBay, it's really in the £5-£10 range.

These Straits Settlements coins ended up circulating widely in Western Canada, and it became a political problem, because they were worth considerably less than the (very similar-looking) Canadian equivalent coin, and the banks wouldn't take them.
