Searched ten nickel rolls this afternoon. This 2014-P Jefferson nickel was in the last roll.

The front is normal except for the vanishing rim under 2014.

The reverse is rather unusual. The middle of Monticello is gleaming, flat, and gone. The entire reverse is super shallow. Aside from a few scratches, the magnifier shows no abrasions that would make me think it was sanded out. It's almost like the die just tapped the surface instead of driving into it deeply. In the windows cut into the smooth area, there are no visible scratches or any disturbances. The edges are sharp. If it had been sanded manually, I don't see how you could avoid touching those.

The nickel also feels a little light. I ordered a two decimal place scale from Amazon, but it won't be here for another few days. The coin visibly seems to be the same height as other nickels, but that's not saying much.

Any thoughts?

100% sanded off. We see a lot of these here. The planchet wouldn't have that many scratches on it.

Yes just damaged—it didn't leave the mint looking like this. Looks to me like the obverse rim also has been abraded.

Why would someone sand this? Who knows why but they did.

Bizarre. Is there some kind of art like a hobo nickel that people make out of Jefferson nickels?

We see this so often here.
My theory is the new "front" loading washers and dryers are causing this.
