Now that I am looking at recent coins under magnification, I found this half-S, half-blob on a 2015-P Jefferson nickel. It's certainly possible that it is PMD, but the blob seems to protrude upwards from the surface.

Is this what would happen if the inner curve of the S just cracked off in a die chip?

If necessary, I can try to take some sunlit pictures tomorrow. I obviously had to use a light at night.

Yes, Brandmeister, you have identified it yourself. Good job!

Thanks for the help, guys. I would call this the first genuine error coin that I've found roll hunting. Into the collection it goes!

Very cool find! A nice die crack that runs across the top of STATES and terminates with the nice die chip, that you called out. Nice pics too.

The evening pictures with the LED light were helped by Dearborn's tip about filtering with a ply of tissue. I tried without that trick, and the glare was so harsh it was impossible to see anything. But good ol' indirect sunlight is best, so here are a few daytime pictures:

The mangled first T in STATES is more easily visible, plus the die crack running along the top. Whoever gave the tip about rotating the coin to different angles was also helpful. Some of this stuff is super hard to see without the right angle of light.
