So we start with a 1972 Kennedy half dollar image. Straight out of my Canon, it's 5184px X 3456px, 3.93MB.

Open it in Irfanview. 100% free.

First, we crop: Use your mouse pointer to make a square around the image. Get it close, then you can do each side one at a time to get it right. Hit CTRL-Y and boom, it's cropped.

The new size is 3058px X 3070px.

Then we hit CTRL-R and the resize box opens.

Now we resize it, change the width to 800px in the box shown and hit enter.

Now we hit CTRL-S to save. We change it to a Webp file and 60 compression.

You can do this with jpg files too, use 70 compression for those.

Here is the finished product. 102KB and 800 pixels across.

Even at 1200px across it's only 250KB.

Very nice tutorial. I've been using Photoshop Elements but I'm going to give this a try.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art

Nice tutorial. I understand people don't prefer to install programs. Anyone try free online https://picresize.com/ ? That has a max filesize when saving I just noticed, and crop when browsing before. Needs to be tested on image quality and ease of use. Pixlr is ok but just looks like they are charging 1.99 per month now for a PLUS to get unlimited saves and ad free monthly or 99 cents I think paid for a year at once. The easier it is to resize and not get closed threads for not posting photos the more users you may have.

I still find the free Faststone image viewer my choice and I could explain also as its quite easy to use, https://www.faststone.org/ but Irfanview and others all work pretty well, as do some of the other online options, just need to do some testing to see whats easiest for the newbies out there as that is probably the most important thing to start, and better would be free.

For faststone, After the image loads, press and hold CTRL and then press R while ctrl is held down at the same time (CTRL+R) then release to resize up or normally down to any resolution such as to 800 pixels or 600 or lower on pixels-width and it will maintain the original aspect ratio.

Press CTRL+S at same time to save in JPG format (there is an options button in bottom right to even adjust the jpg quality). Its also capable to rotate an image, just hitting R key when viewing the image. cropping and adjust colors like brightness or contrast is found on the right mouse click menu meaning you just press the right mouse button to see the menu then select the option.

I've been using Irfanview for about a decade and its a great tool.

After I resize, I use File>Save As and I set the maximum size and Irfanview auto compresses the file to that size.

Thank You for this, I am trying to make this work. The hardest part is to get good pics with the proper lighting. I am using a Canon rebel xti with a Tamron Macro Lens and the lighting part is the hardest.

I'm trying to upload, but I'm not computer savvy. Hard to teach this old dog new tricks. I can't even download Irfanview, ugh!
