Surveillance video was probably key, but the numbskulls were depositing them in their bank accounts and CoinStars.

Did they tell the judge "we only wanted to check them for DDRs and mint errors"?

Reading it reminds me of a time I pulled into a bank parking lot to see two Brink's guards rapidly cleaning up a HUGE mess of dimes they had dropped and scattered over a part of the parking lot. I asked them why they were bothering b/c if they left it alone the mess would take care of itself. It gave them a laugh during their tedious task. I somehow thought if I offered to help that they would refuse my offer.

Glad they caught them. People who keep their coins at home should use a good safe and have cameras guarding their house in my opinion. And do not tell anyone what your have except for trusted family, loose lips sinks ships. Recently in my city 100K of gold and silver was stolen from an elderly person who enjoyed showing their stash, bad choice. I live in the mid west and the supposed friend was caught selling the coins/bars in Florida.

You have to admire their determination. Moving 10000 pounds of metal, bag by bag, takes some serious dedication. Happy to see that they were caught. And caught by their own stupidity is the icing on the cake.
