The reeding along the edge where you find the cut-off design suggests that an elliptical planchet settled against the southeast portion of the collar for the first strike. Then it appears that the elliptical coin migrated to the northwest portion of the collar for the second strike, where a second set of reeding was generated. There's something else going on since we see die-struck, first-strike letters on a sloping surface next to the second-strike elements. This suggests to me that this part of the elliptical coin was sheared off between the hammer die and a stiff collar. The sharp, vertical flange on the opposite face supports this scenario. So we have an elliptical clip that received an elliptical strike clip. This is a unique error combination. (Mike Diamond)
