Thoughts and opinions wanted on what may have happened to this coin as the number 1 is missing and with coin in hand and under the microscope I am unable to see any trace of where the 1 should be. Coin is a bit off in weight and diameter. Thanks to all.....

Can only think that this must be a grease-filled die issue.

I explained the weight and the dia in the other coinsite where you posted. Grease-filled die or struck through something (rag bit, paper, etc).

The coin is well worn, so that probably explains the little lighter weight. I've noticed on other 59's that the rims seem to spread a little after their bouncy, dropsy journeys through people's pockets. I don't know what causes the slight dia growth, maybe burrs flattened or just use on such thin planchets to begin with.

I'm thinking that it might be a Grease Filled Die issue as stated.

okiecoiner, not all of us are not in that club. Would you mind repeating the explanation here, as I'm quite curious about it.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I think you may have a late state example of Reverse K1 where the reverse die may be collapsing in the area of the 1.

Can you post good clear full side photos of the obverse and reverse.

Has the coin been bent or hit on the obverse? Sometimes that can cause a weak area also as the coin wears unevenly.

I certainly can Phil310.. The coin has not been damaged and is straight and in decent condition for the wear & tear expected for its age. Appreciate your input & thoughts..

In what I see, the 1 has been removed by PMD. In the microscope image there are many short vertical lines present be it faint, smoothed by wear. As to the diameter.....obverse has been hit at 2 o'clock which could account for out of round appearance and slight oversizing.

Can't believe this is a PMD issue.

nickelsguy, not sure where you see the damage at 2 o'clock and with coin in hand I can say there is no damage that I see. I'm attaching another picture with different light and angle as some times pictures can be deceiving.

Coinfrog I agree with you.....
