I know that there are a few things on these nickels to look for to ensure that they are not fakes, But I cannot remember any of them (My brain went on holiday and hasn't returned yet)
Can you kind folks please help me with a list? I'm looking to buy one (no I have none in site yet - just getting ready)

I think the year matters - I had a thread a few months back about a possible 3.5 and people contributed a bunch of markers. I recall die crack on Reverse out of tail to rim and extreme metal flow on rear legs and belly of bison.

Simply enter "3 Leg Nickel" in the Search box above and scroll down past the advertisments to read many past threads on this subject including many photos.

The makers for the 3 Leg are:
1 - obv. 3rd feather detached from hair. 2 - rev. EPU separated from buffalo's back. 3 - rev. buffalo's beard at right lower than the left side. 4 - rev. hind legs are abraided. 5 - rev. buffalo looks like it's going #1 with a stream.

The link above seems to be for the 17-D 3.5 legger, not the 37-D 3-leg.

In addition to the excellent list that @ns put together, I would add that there should be a moth-eaten appearance at the back of the Indian's neck on the obverse, from die erosion or rusting. Quote: Save yourself a headache and buy one slabbed.ANACS. @John1, what happened to buy the coin, not the slab? It's always good to know the diagnostics of a major variety like this so you can feel confident about what you are buying. The 3-legged Buffalo is a pretty easy one to weed out fakes if you know what to look for.

Always buy the coin not the holder. But,if you are not familiar with the variety you need to trust the slabbing company especially when fakes are out there. John1
