Looking for a decent strategy to get started... would you buy a couple of rolls to have something to work with or go at coin by coin inspecting each along the way and adding them one at a time? I am headed to a coin show this weekend and am completely up in the air as which way to go....

So let's get this straight - you're starting to collect Indian Head cents by date from scratch?

What are your intentions? a long term project and higher grade examples or low grade coins just to fill holes? Many in the 1860's and 70's can be pricy even in G-4 condition. I would start with the Flying Eagle and Copper Nickel Indians first. Then start considering the more valuable ones from the 60's and 70's since they will only continue to rise in cost. I still have yet to complete my series with the 1877 and 1909S but even without those two key dates, the rest of the coins cost about $1100 to assemble and range in grades from G-4 to XF-40.

Looking to collect VF or better and have fun, not an overnight project by any means... I just can't shell out hundreds per coin to start Morgans right now...so I am scaling back a bit and starting with Indian Heads....

It sounds like a fun project! If it were me, I would buy easy dates in lousy condition for a song from my LCS just to have the satisfaction of filling in holes. Later on I would purchase better-condition examples as my finances permitted.
Starting with VF or better sounds pricey to me... but of course pricey is a relative term for all of us.

As a kid, I'd get low-grade examples from dealer boxes at coin shows. If you're doing it for fun, do whatever suits you.

Several Indians are $100+ in g grade, in VF you are talking hundred of dollars for a few coins.

Maybe I will scale back the grading standards a bit once I see what they are going for this weekend. I go to this monthly show and take my son and I buy him a couple of grab bags of world coins as that is what he enjoys each week. I am trying to get him to structure his collection so that he can target certain things but I want it to be his hobby too and not mine for him so I back off and let him do his thing... but I think it would be fun to target the best deal I can find on an Indian each time I go and add a piece to my own puzzle.

So I got a feel for the set today today at the show....only about 10 dealers had them to look at but a good enough selection was available to figure out what I want to do... if I look to collect VF or better, I can have plenty of fun.... I went back to a dealer that has been good to my son in educating him in a number of items/subjects and sharing and showing us his collection to support him first... He only had about a dozen Indians with him today and I bought what he had in VF which was a 1906 and 1907 and I got the 1905 at another dealer....all three for under $20 to get started. It will take a while, but will be a lot of fun to search for what I want each month. This show only had about 20 dealers today...there is one in April with 200+ expected so I will start putting some $$ aside for that show....

Yeah, VF coins are affordable from the 80's, 90's and 1900's. Wait until you see what VF coins from the 60's and 70's cost! Ther is another member on here putting together a set of high grade IHC's so keep an eye out for their posts.

It is a great set to work on and you can pick which conditions you can afford given your budget for each of the dates and mint marks. I completed my set a couple of years ago. The lowest grade was a 1877 at VF35. I have a few dates I want to upgrade.
