Hello there! I am new to this so please be kind ;-)

My husband (and sometimes me :-) metal detects and he has found many amazing coins on his journey but this one is particularly intriging. Not only because he found it 14" deep in the ground, but how great a condition its in for being 222 yrs old.

Looking at the back side there are some errors, if you will - in the 'o' of the word 'of' and the lack of, if you will, the 't' in 'cent'. Like there was something 'extra' in the die when it was struck?

Any thoughts?

Thank you, thank you in advance for any and all input.

@des, first welcome to CCF. Second, that is an amazing find to dig up--well done for you both! As to the possibility of a mint error--the extra metal could be a die chip, but it almost looks "smeared" and flattened to me, suggesting that this coin was struck with undamaged dies, but then got banged around a bit well before it was buried.

Thank you, Spence! It IS a really cool find and we are newbies when it comes to detecting errors. And yes. The word smear definitely describes it

Thank you for your input!!

desenag77 I would suspect environmental damage. Reverse hit by something, PMD. Great pictures and a nice find.

Really cool find! Just curious, what state was this found in? Cool to see something with that much detail found in the earth. Probably dropped and buried within just a few years (or less) of being minted!
