There are some varieties of the portcullis penny reverse, but generally British collectors aren't anywhere near as interested in them as US collectors are in cent varieties.
I've noticed something similar on some UK pennies myself. The part of the die bearing the portcullis design must have lots of fairly sharp square raised blocks. During the life of the die, I wonder if the edges of these blocks get abraded and worn down, producing this appearance when the coins are struck.
