@jdr, did they post a weight? I wonder if that crystalline structure is on the surface as mentioned by @chase, or something else.

Yes, a long soak in 100% acetone might reduce or eliminate the apparent crud. No harm in trying.

Could have been in a cup holder and a design was transferred on coin which is a stain. anyway try acetone as suggested.

thin tape was place on the coin then acid was applied to erode the unprotected areas, then the tape was removed - Homemade etching.

The reverse looks like an acid spot. So I agree some kind of acid exposure.
