I know some say they may or may not have made a proof set in 1964, some say they made some SMS sets others say no only single coins etc... But I am trying to take some photos of this set still sealed from the mint and they really are pretty with no marks on the coin, only the plastic. How do these pics look ? Took this with my iphone 14, I am not sure about these pics tho.

How do the pics look tho ? Should I take some with my canon camera and post differences? I have had a few dealers say they look like sms in person because of the details and satin look of the coins but I can't tell the difference. I saw the one Kennedy posted by pegs and that coin looks like junk and has less details than other coins I have seen. I am just trying to work on my pictures and not sure if they should be more clear, less glare, more glare etc.

Thanks for your input about the quality of pics. You can be honest, I can take it.

They made mint and proof sets.

There were never SMS sets sold. You have a better chance of getting hit by lightning every day for a week than finding any 1964 SMS coin in the wild.

I never said I bought this set, I bought other sets but this one was given to me by a good friend in DC over 30 + years ago.

I was trying to get input about photography, not asking what the coins are worth. I can post pics of other sets if that helps with the photography questions...........

But I do appreciate the input from others telling me about the so called sets that no one can have because they believe it to be so...

LOL! Pics are obviously hampered through the cello - and all seem normal quality strikes for proofs - nothing special. Picture quality maybe 6,5 out out 10

I'd call them serviceable photos for general questions. For small details, you might need to tune a few aspects of your setup. I am no coin photo pro, btw, and if you want to set up with a real camera, there are folks here who have a great depth of knowledge on macrophotography of coins.

fwiw, my 2¢:

There is a bit too much glare on some of the devices to see them properly. A bit of light diffusion, possibly from a few ply of tissue, should be enough to cut that to a manageable level.

Also, I suggest picking a black or white background. That makes it much easier for photo software to find the black point. Any colored surface, including fingers, seems to not work as well for phone images.

Some folks really like the book stacking technique to keep the phone or tablet still so it can autofocus, but your pics seem to be in focus regardless.

Sometimes ya gotta give these guys a minute on the non-coin forums. You post a shiny coin, they're gonna swerve off topic for a while.

Especially when they only read the topic headliner and head straight for the pictures, and don't read the OP's questions and thoughts, even I fall into that trap sometimes............

No, you never said you bought the set. But you did, very clearly, express your confusion as to what they were, so I decided to help make it clear for you. So, how about you lighten up a bit and maybe say thank you?

Do the coin photos look like the coins? If so, then the photos are good. For sure the cello is causing some problems IMO. You could experiment with lighting angles (if you have not already) to find the right angles to show the coins best and minimize the reflections off the cello. You could also remove the coins from the cello if you really want to get the best photos. Most likely any photo you take will be compromised by the cello in some way.

Hiya Zinkin. The camera in an IPhone is usually good enough for decent pics. Lighting is crucial though. I use an ordinary adjustable desk lamp with a "daylight" bulb in it - slightly blue, which gets rid of the yellowness of ordinary indoor lighting. The forum guideline for picture sizes is 300kb or so I believe so I just WhatsApp my pic to my tablet, edit it there for size if I need to, and WhatsApp it back again, before I post it here. Seems to work for me. Most of my pics are hand held but if I'm concentrating on detail some sort of bracing is advisable - like a pile of books...
All the best anyway. Above all, have fun!

I have a tri-pod for my Canon Rebel xti with a Tamron Macro lens and my iphone 14 - Check

Remove from Cello - I am debating with my self over and over about this one. All of the coins in this set (from what I can see) apart from the Kennedy do not have a nic or scratch on them and then I think the kennedy line I see is from the cello (I think). I am thinking (and this is the debate I keep having) the set in this condition is worth more than individual coins. After research, this is clearly not the case, as I see it (but you know the saying about opinions). PCGS did tell me to send in the set and they would grade it as such but then it will be cut out and no longer a set sealed from the mint and will be here say after that, unless they (pcgs) put it in some kind of holder as a set (which I believe they do not do). Does it even matter that it is a set, as each coin should stand on its own ?

Sorry about the ramble..
Thank You All for the input...

Hiya. My gut reaction is to keep the set in its original packaging. I don't like entombing coins in plastic slabs. It feels too sterile. If the coins weren't in a set as such I'd put them in plastic capsules, in a cabinet, or white foldy-uppy-sticky coin holders with appropriately sized windows in, in an album. It all depends on how you want to store them or show them. Hope this helps...
