I recently purchased a slabbed 1858/7 Flying Eagle. the coin has an EF 40 details designation. My question is what is best to preserve this coin. It has corrosion on it and I am concerned that it might get worst with time. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't be averse to a Verdi-care soak, but don't expect a miracle.

I think it looks good and stable enough as-is. It would be easy to make it appear worse. Not a bad coin regardless of the details qualifier!

I agree with all three statements.

Without the coin in hand , hard to tell
If the corrosion is into the metal.
If it is not and not completely hard
it would be a restoration project .
Would love to have a go at that piece
using some old Blue Ribbon coin conditioner
or Coin Care .

Verdi-Care might help somewhat with the corrosion.

That's a lot of corrosion. You may just be throwing money hand over fist with false hopes of restoring that coin.

Thanks for the feedback. I think at this time I will leave the coin in the slab. There is a lot of downside damage that could happen with treatment.

I would give it a go but that is me. Couple of days in Acetone, 12 hour soak in VC, and then back in Acetone. Won't change the color but might clean up the devices a bit. Caveat tho, appears neutralized now and you'll never change the grade or details designation so why bother.
