Jjpe Valued Member United States 106 Posts	Posted 11/11/2024 07:13 am Hi everybody, as I was researching the 1970s small date,I included a pic from copper coins what you're saying this is the best way to tell a small date from a large date. A crease runs horizontally across the top of the diagonal of the seven on all large dates. On the small dates the crease it's completely absent on small dates. Since there was no crease on this coin, am I to believe this is a small date. The numbers on the top seem to line up although there's a little Machine Doubling I believe going on that makes it a little difficult to put the line on top of the numbers. Also the word Liberty doesn't look like a small date. And the curb of the nine is iffy. So it's really going on with this coin. Do I detect some light doubling in the date? Also there seems to be something behind the S mint mark. Is that an S over S? Thanks for all your help everybody I really appreciate it Report this Post to the Staff

It is easy to get them wrong - I even bought a "Small Date" from PCGS that was indeed a Large date! Report this Post to the Staff

Jjpe Valued Member United States 106 Posts	Posted 11/15/2024 6:43 pm You know it just keeps getting better every time I come out here with coins that I can't figure out. I never would have thought of the crease getting worn off. And I'm thinking by what I was reading, which should have contained in there something about wear on the crease, that it was a small date. I never would have thought about that good call everybody. I did put the line on top and what was confusing was the blur coming off the top of the number, like where do you line it up at. That's why there's other features to look for as you said the nine. Great job everybody you all get a kudos and of course great learning tool I'm going out there and I'm going to teach people.
