So . I am a fairly new coin enthusiast and I have run across this 1986D penny, It has what looks like Cud marks on the front of the coin on several spots. There are also some really strange ridges going down Lincoln's ear. At first, I thought the dots were gas bubbles, but they are extremely hard and cannot be popped, The coin also does not have even thickness on both sides. One side is actually thicker than the other.. any thoughts from my experts out there? in addition, the coin is starting to tone beautifully with purples and pinks!

It's zinc rot that's starting. PMD. Spend it while you can. Otherwise it will turn into dust.
Errers and Varietys.

Looks like zinc rot to me. Post Mint Damage, a break / pin hole in the copper layer(plating) has allowed air and moisture onto the zinc core. Spender to me. Wish I had better news for you but keep looking and good luck to CCF

Dragonfly64, Here is a link for you to bookmark and study: https://www.error-ref.com/Type Cud in their search box. Cuds alway include the rim of the coin. Your Cuds are trapped debris between the copper plating and the zinc core not trapped gas that's why they are solid and can't be popped. John1

Thank you for the information. I have another question? If all Cuds are on the rim area what do you call the blob on the nose of this nose candy quarter? I thought that was also a Cud?
