For known varieties in sufficient quantity, I think patience is a much better strategy. There will always be another coin. If you make a more aggressive monetary move, it should be either because it's a very nice example of the coin you desire, or because the variety is rare enough that you won't get another opportunity for years. I have passed on a few decent variety coins recently, just because the coin didn't grab me with the wow factor, even at a fair price. I guess you can trade up, but that seems like a headache for anything over $50.
