I purchased this coin a few years back. I have been thinking of getting it certified. Do you think it is worth it?

I love this variant, I believe this is the "VOOE" Nelson-3. The C in VOCE was first entered reversed, then corrected. While I can't speak to the value, I don't know if having the coin certified would add any value to it, as most collectors of Colonial coins, like EAC Large cent and Half Cent collectors don't place much weight on the grading companies. That said it won't hurt the value, and if it were to straight grade, you do have the added value of being more desirable to the newer and uninitiated collector wanting to start or add to an early copper or colonial type-coin collection.

I'm going to say for me it's a nice EF/VF+ the reverse planchet is quite rough and the strike could be better centered. Otherwise it is a really nice example, it doesn't have the corrosion look of a "dug up" coin and there is no verdigris to distract, most all of the design is very easy to see and no rim bump issues I see on many of these.

A slab does offer a bit more protection than a normal flip or 2x2 would, but if prevents one from examining the coin in hand. I keep 90% if my early copper coins in 2x2 cotton pouches inside 2x2 archival paper envelopes. The other 10% I have are in slabs as purchased. Some left in due to the slab label itself adding value, like my "Syd Martin Collection" items others just for the protection more than any real added value.

Also I wanted to add if you plan to sell the coin, it would be dependent on the venue you are selling it in. Major auction firm? They will prefer it to be slabbed, some like Great Collections can provide the slabbing for less than you would spend getting it slabbed yourself and have a better plan of which company to submit that will bring the best price it's in their interest as well.

I see AU58 with great surfaces. I think this is a $2K coin so well worth grading.
