Just slowly progressing through the plastic tub of what was my late grandfather's Coin Collection which is now mine and just going through all the Coins that haven't been professionally Graded. I'm going through a bunch of Indian Head penny's and this one is curious, Coin Snap Identification shows it as a 1909-S Indian Head penny. I know Coin Snap Identification isn't the most reliable thing but the issue is the S Mint Mark is unusually worn compared to the rest of the Coin, it may possibly have been damaged as well. I would love to see what you think!

More expert-type posters than myself can weigh in here, but off the top I'd say that the mark is just a tad further to the right than it should be. I wouldn't bet on it being a mint mark.

Dearborn Thanks for the reply. let me get the coin and take some zoomed in as best quality as I can get shots of the mint mark area. Will post them shortly. also, if you wouldn't mind giving an estimated Grade based on the images, mint mark aside?

I don't think that's an S on the reverse, it looks more like a contact mark that shifted some metal.

I am not that familiar with Indian Head cents, but something feels off about this coin. It might just be the phone camera filter, but the surface looks mottled and grainy. The top part of the shield is missing. I would not be shocked if one of our experts said it was a cast fake, but like I said, I am a relative beginner with IHC.

Not an S. Hard to tell from photos, but it may be a cleaned and damaged coin.

It is not in the right location for a 1909S IH.
Looks like it may have taken a hit pushing the metal up.

This is not an S. Legit 1909S IHNC mint mark positions do not match up to this.

Throw away any coin apps such as this. At present they all give wrong information as you have noted here. Ai versions are included. Some of the existing ones have been made by people who only market them to make money. The apps do not give accurate information.

Since you are new and mentioned it, there are precautions to understanding grading companies and how they work. Make sure you review the info her eon this forum before thinking about sending anything in. Your wallet will thanks you.

Agree with above posts, the coin is not an s mint. In addition, it appears to be cleaned. Still a cool coin though.

Thank you very much Earle42 for your advice and the link, it's much appreciated! And thank you to everyone else who has commented and helped me figure this out! I am just beginning my venture into the world of Coins as my late Grandfather left his entire collection to me and it's a bit overwhelming to say the least! Many of them he sent to PCGS and are Graded and verified but there is still an enormous amount that are not Graded or professionally verified and I know if I'm not careful I could very likely get taken advantage of and lose out on potentially a lot of money. I just plan on going through the forums on here, posting questions and talking with those of you that have been doing this for many years and with some time hopefully I can figure it out.
