OK, as I am up early I'll kick off with this one (that I have posted before) which is a 1691 /2 Bolognino of Innocent XII from the Gubbio mint. It's another of those which doesn't feature any Papal arms but instead shows coat of arms of Bologna.

The fleur-de-lis at the top of the shield apparently represents the city's historical ties to the Angevin dynasty,

I like how the greenish patina in the fields sets off the high points of the design details.
Since I don't have an Innocent XII coin to post, I'll go backwards and post a Benedict XIV coin I didn't bother to post earlier (since we had another example of the type), because it matches the patination effect on Bacchus2's coin

I know some collectors wouldn't like that look, but to me it's attractive because it's uniform (apparently ANACS didn't like it because they gave it a "Details/Corroded" .... not that I paid for that grade. If I recall correctly, I got it for $12.95 on ebay)

That's a great example with "honest wear" and preservation through centuries of atmospheric changes..

I really prefer my coins to have had a life - though still be in reasonable condition. There's a sweet spot I think we all strive for with these. Coins from the Papal States do tend to have been well used (as intended) but that just adds to their interest.

Todays coin from Innocent XII is the simple 1699 1 Quattrino from the Bologna mint. This design was used by many rulers for the lowest denomination coin.

Please keep going with any additonal Innocent XII coins, Bacchus2. My first is the next reign, Alexander.

This is my last Innocent XII (ND 1691-1700 1/2 Baiocco) and I have posted it before where you helpfully helped me narrow down the identification http://goccf.com/t/469565) but I've included it again for completeness.

It seems to be one of those coins where varieties abound but this is Muntoni 158, Berman 2308. It's another one from the Gubbio mint

I think that is all I have from Innocent XII - so looking forward to seeing those Alexanders....

I just have one.
Alexander VIII was elected pope on October 6, 1689 at the age of 79 1/2. There has not been a pope since him elected at a more advanced age. Unsurprisingly, his reign was short, and he died sixteen months later, Frebruary, 1691.
Here is an undated teston struck in Rome, featuring an image of Saint Bruno, founder of the Carthusian monastic order:

As we know, papal coins most commonmly feature Saints Peter and/or Paul, or Mary (hmmm ... Peter, Paul and Mary? ).
So ... why Saint Bruno? All I can figure out is that October 6, the date of Alexander's election, is the feast day of St. Bruno.
So, that's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
