Oh wow. The reverse of that teston really pops. Fantastic example. There's also quite a notable change in Gregory XIII's portrait between the two strikings Perhaps the engraver was capturing a bit of the aging process in his work, if indeed it was the same engraver.

My last contribution for this period is again a coin of Gregory XIII, this modest quattrino struck in Fano, just picked up a few days ago and not yet in hand: Copyright InAsta The fellow on the reverse is Saint Paternian, who according to local tradition was an early (4th century) bishop of Fano.

I think that's the first time we've seen a coin from that mint. Nice example. The fabric looks different from the other mints. Even the lettering on the reverse looks distinct.
I don't have anything else for this group alas, indeed I don't have that many left to post :(

Quote: indeed I don't have that many left to post :( Nor do I; just a couple more this century, though I think one will nab us a mint we haven't seen yet. Sunday we'll move the goalposts back another few decades: Pius IV (1559-1565) Paul IV (1555-1559) Marcellus II (1555) who actually struck a few types in his 22 day reign Julius III (1550-1555) Paul III (1534-1549)

I just have one coin for Pius IV - this ND (1559-1565) 1 Giulio from the Rome mint. As he was one of the famous Medici family that is the distinctive coat of arms seen on the obverse. The reverse shows Saint Peter standing holding keys on lowered left hand and open book in right.

My giulio is from the next earliest reign, Paul IV, and also from the Rome mint, but featuring an image of St. Paul holding a sword and book: There is something odd about the obverse, the way the coat of arms takes off at an angle for its lower part (double struck?)

That's a really nice example. The silver is good quality too and the reverse very well struck up with St Paul having a very expressive face.. As for the obverse - yes I think it must be double struck. There's a strong ghost of a "S" from the initial strike just after the last S of PAVLVS.
