Now for something completely different (and weird!)
During calendar year 2024 I saved all change received in cash transactions and set them aside in my change jar. I finally got around to counting out the 2024 totals. I live in the suburban Phoenix area and travelled only to western Colorado, Miami FL and Myrtle Beach SC for short trips during the year. At least 90% of the change received was in the Phoenix area.
I did not keep track of paper money received back in change.
These days, like most people, debit or credit cards are used for a majority of transactions. As a general rule anything I purchase under about $15 is done in cash and anything above that is done via debit or credit card.
During the year I got 696 coins back for a grand total of $74.66. Here is the breakdown:
Coin Nr. ValuePennies 281 $2.81
Nickels 71 $3.55
Dimes 118 $11.80
Quarters 226 $56.50
Grand Total 696 $74.66
Average value per coin received: 10.73 cents
I then broke down the years and mint marks of the almost 700 coins received. The year with the most coins was 2022 with 49 coins, and the least since 2000 was 2009 with 2. The oldest coin found was a pair of 1961 pennies, both a Denver and a Philly.
Mint marks were overwhelmingly from Denver. We rarely see Philadelphia coins here. There were 4 coins from San Franscico (all pennies from 1969 thru 1974), 139 coins from Philadelphia and 553 from Denver.
As for
ATB and other special series quarters; the most were the 2023 Ka'Ike coins, 5 from Denver and 2 from Philly. The most quarters of any year/mint combination was the 2021 Delaware Crossing variety with 6 from Denver.
With Dimes the only combination in double digits was the 2006 Denver issue with 10. 2023D had 9 and along with a single 2023P made the only other year when 10 were found.
Nickels were the least seen coin, only 71 all told, including 2 Canadians. The most for a single year was 8 for 1999, with 3 Denvers and 5 Phillies. The largest of a single combination was 6 2023D's.
Pennies were of course the largest number in aggregate, with 281, 4 from San Francisco, 42 from Philly and 235 from Denver. The year with the most was 2022, with 29; all Denver except for 1 Philly. Several years had double digits; 2024, 2023, 2022, 2021 and 2000.
I did not receive any half-dollar or dollar coins in change thruout the year.
I have the complete breakdown but it appears I cannot upload a sharing link to this forum. I have it in a PDF which is 6 pages but if I copy and paste it here as text the formatting would be lost. If there is a way to share the PDF or Word Document please let me know!
