A fairly major find came across my desk this week and I felt it was worthy of a little more promotion than just quietly putting it up on the website. A very strong Class IV DDO, now listed as 2000-P 25¢ VA WDDO-001, shows a strong spread to the NE on the right obverse. This class of doubling is very unusual for the single-squeeze era, but not unprecedented. A similar extreme Class IV DDO is known on the proof Pennsylvania quarters (1999-S 25¢ Pr PA WDDO-001). The early State Quarters are often overlooked for the lack of known doubled dies and also for how common severe Die Deterioration Doubling is (which makes spotting doubled dies even harder). But this find shows there maybe some really nice varieties still waiting to be discovered after 25 years of circulation.
2000-P 25¢ VA WDDO-001 Description: Strong Class IV doubling to the NE shows on the right side of the obverse. Doubling is strongest on IGWT, AMERICA, the knot of the queue, and the upper hair detail. Doubling also visible on the mintmark, STATES OF, DOLLAR, and the last letters of LIBERTY. Die Markers: Obverse: Die crack through the designers' initials JF WC with a die chip left of the J. Die damage behind and below the ear. Reverse: Die gouge right of the top of the R in PLURIBUS. Submitted By: Eric Schmidt Cross References: None known

That's a very cool submission. Any chance you snapped full coin images for posterity? Sometimes there are markers and other non-obvious identifiers lurking until more finds establish them.

UPDATE 4/19: Unfortunately, I have to retract this post. After the submission of a second, more advanced example, and consulting with others, we have determined that this is not a true doubled die! This is an atypical, and very deceptive, form of Die Deterioration Doubling. Though there appears to be split serifs, this is only due to metal flow and deformation from the deteriorating die. The key to spotting this is the light die chipping around some of the design elements. This is most noticeable in the hair details behind the ear and on some of the outer lettering. In the previous images posted here, that is noticeable on the left side of the C in AMERICA and the left side of the right leg of the last A in AMERICA where the doubling appears irregular and more like die chips. This is from the first coin submitted from Schmidt: The following are from a second coin recently submitted:

That is deceptive looking. Not very "flat and shelf like" as MD is normally. Thanks for the update!
