I'm replacing some missing felts in an old coin cabinet, and I could only locate polyester felt, not wool felt that presumably was used.

Does anyone have any knowledge of the effect of polyester on coins?

I believe that polyester is inert. There are quite a few types of coin flips made with it. However, you have to be sure that there are no other chemicals added to the polyester which could affect your coins in the long term.

Thanks. Now I am wondering how I can determine if there are any additives?

I would first try to find a compatible wool felt online. A cursory search yielded quite a few options.

@ori, I seem to recall there being a big discussion of glue outgassing in a prior CCF thread about coin cabinet liners. It isn't just the felt to worry about.

That sounds like a plan. of course, might there be chemicals in the wool felt as well?

Perhaps. But you could probably find some organic chemical-free wool. If it's dyed, it has some chemicals in it. Wash it well - put it in a garment bag (pillowcase) in the wash so that it doesn't disintegrate.

I see that there are organic wool felts colored with natural dyes. I wouldn't skimp on something my coins contact for long periods of time.
