Quote: This next coin might be a fake - I would be surprised, and very excited, if it isn't. This was among a collection of coins that my grandfather had accumulated. I think it's a lovely design and it's a shame it didn't make it into circulation. Even I it is a fake it's still a keeper too. Very nice! Sentimental value is going to exceed any other value real or fake.

Here are a couple more coins that I suspect are fakes. Two $2 coins, a 1995 and a 1996. They could be just worn during circulation but they just don't look right to me. The coins on the left are the ones I suspect are dodgy. I weighed a few genuine coins and the 1995s averaged 6.51g and the dodgy was 6.81g. The 1996s weighed 6.57g and the dodgy one 6.47g. A $2 coin is supposed to be 6.60g. Anyway if they are only examples of unusual wear they still look 'odd' so they will stay in the odds and sods collection.

Speaking of things sentimental, this damaged 2c coin is another coin from Grandpa's collection. Gramps was ex-British army and a real stickler for the rules. This coin was issued to him by a bank. As far as he was concerned it was the bank's duty to remove damaged coins and forward them on to the Mint for recycling. He was so miffed that they hadn't followed the rules he kept it in his collection and annotated his album with the entry in the pic. Gives me a chuckle when I think about it.

This 'medallion' (?) was encased in an acrylic paperweight that had long ago clouded over. All that was visible was that there was a 'gold coin' inside. I gave it an acetone bath and this is the result. I think these were issued by the State Savings Bank of Victoria in 1970 to commemorate the 1770 bicentenary of Captain Cook in the Endeavour and might have been issued to school kids but I'm not sure. Does anyone know more about these coins/medallions or whatever they are called?

For the $2 post, here is an image from what I have on the fakes. 2003 is a common one but I am told other years are involved. The EL is under the bust whereas only the E should be. The eyes are another sign as both eyes should be visible and not just one.

Thank you QldSandy for that info and pictures. I have read somewhere that fake $2 coins were made for 1992, 1995, 1996, 1998 and 2003. I don't have any pictures for reference unfortunately. This 2010 $1 mob of roos coin is unusual in that both sides of the coin have something going on. The obverse has a clear planchet flaw running from "B" in Elizabeth to "A" at the end of Australia. The reverse has three coin chips. One on the top roo (rabbit ear) and two on the big roo (back of head and a very small one on the chest). There is also a couple of 'lines' that look like doubling to me (I am definitely no expert). One is on the back of the hind leg of the top roo and the other on the front of the hind leg on the second roo. Anyone else have some oddities they would like to show please? Surely I am not the only one who collects these things?

I've posted this somewhere else before. Someone's been out shooting roos.

Interesting coin, Sally - that's a nice lamination on the obverse. MachinMachinMan, someone had serious roo rage!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

I don't know what this one is. A friend had it and didn't want it so I did a trade and it is now in my "odds and sods" collection. I suspect it might be a Japanese issue as some of the characters look Japanese to me. I have tried searching on Numista and the Web but have not found anything similar. It is in a plastic capsule and weighs 8.4g and is 30mm in diameter. Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you Triggersmob for identifying it for me. I was well and truly on the wrong track. Thanks jbuck for your comment too. I will dig out some more oddities soon. I hope that someone else has some odds to share too?
