Still going through the 81s. How could this damage happen to the mint mark only with no other signs of hit anywhere nearby? Looks like just a big blob, but I think it was supposed to be a D. Otherwise the coin is MS.

Can you give us a full coin shot of the obverse and reverse?

ADDED: To me, it just looks like a chunk of misplaced metal that settled in.

Yeah, you can see it from the reverse, just damage, of some sort, after it left the mint.

I'm guessing the obverse damage is incuse? So just some kind of hit pushing the metal towards the reverse of the coin.

@gigi, sometimes we see coins posted that have taken a hit from a BB, but I agree that yours looks more like a cylindrical post.

Looks like Makecents picked up on the same thing I saw on the reverse. so yes, this is just damage.

(This is why we always ask to have both sides of a coin to be uploaded.)
