So I have a major head-scratcher of a question, and I tried to see if it's already been addressed--kind of a hard question to search for though--so when I didn't find anything anywhere, this seemed like the most relevant topic to piggyback onto. I'm new here; my apologies if this is not the preferred method.

With that out of the way: I got my shipping notification for my 2025 Proof Set today and decided to browse the Mint website to see what's new. There, I was shocked to see that several of the American Women Quarters are offered in Uncirculated Rolls... with the S mint mark!

I thought it must be a clerical error, so I checked the PCGS population reports, and sure enough, there are several past issues with populations of San Francisco coins in MS, not PR. So what's the story? Certainly they're not actually intended for circulation? But they don't appear to be offered in any Uncirculated Sets, either. And the price per roll is the same as the D and S rolls, too (P and D roll set for $42; P, D, and S roll set for $63).

I'm stumped. The only non-proof S-mint coins I'm finding on the Mint website are these American Women Quarters. Why do they exist? And why do S unc's not exist for any other current regular issue?

They are sold to collectors at very low prices. Still sales are very low and some of these end up in circulation as collectors save the best and spend the rest.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

AnotherMatt, The S mint marked uncirculated quarters have been available since 2012. No, they're not included with the mint sets, but I think they should be. Years ago, you could just buy the S mint rolls or bags. However, the mint changed it to where you can only get rolls of the S mint quarters in a PDS three roll set. That's a pretty crappy sales tactic in my opinion.

I buy singles from dealers who bought the bags/rolls. Of course, dealer prices went up when the Mint killed the bag and solo roll options.

They exist for the mint to make more money. They are more than four times face value, and some consider then scarce (they are not) and a way to make money from others. In one form or another, it is a racket. I do not buy the rolls or bags.

The Mint is a business and they are self funded (no tax dollars), so they have to make a profit.

Something has to cover the millions wasted on circulating pennies and nickels.

jbuck, you're stirring me up. :) My response is that:
1) The mint is currently making enough off of the dimes, quarters, halves and dollar coins to cover their loss on the cents and nickels.
2) The mint will be making more overall with the production of the cent stopping.
3) The cost to produce S mint quarters is barely above that to produce D and P minted quarters that the mint is already profiting on. There's absolutely no need to mark them up multiples of their face value. It's simply a monopoly gouging. They could sell the S mint quarters at face + shipping + credit card fee and would still be raking it in.
4) Just because they can, doesn't mean they should.

At some point, probably at the end of this year when the Womens Quarters series concludes, I will look to buy a set of S uncirculated.

For some reason I always forget about those pesky S uncirc ones. So a full set these days would be P-D-S-S-S.

Just be glad (I guess?) that they're not sneaking in W uncirc again. Though those were fun.

I've been purchasing the S-mint uncirculated quarters one at a time on ebay. I bought a blank American Women Quarters Dansco page for them, which I added to my 7141.
