This week we travel to the Far East for Philately Friday, and take a look at a stamp issued by the Philippines in 1979. The stamp in question is a 30-Sentimo stamp that commemorates the Golden Jubilee (50th Anniversary) of the Philippine Numismatic and Antiquarian Society (PNAS).
PNAS was founded in 1929 to promote numismatics and antiquarianism via the study of coins, paper money, tokens, medals, stamps, related ephemera and antiquities. Throughout its history, it has been a leader in numismatic study. (I believe it is still in existence, but its online presence does not appear to have been updated recently.)
The stamp features an 1868 Isabella II 20 or 50 Centavos coin along with a 5,000 Gold Piso marking the 5th Anniversary of the New Society; the denomination assignment of the Isabella II coin is based on a relative size comparison with the 5,000 Piso coin.
The First Day Cover's cachet features depictions of the woman found on US-PI silver coinage (and the base metal, 10-25-50 Centavos denominations, regular issue coinage of the independent Philippines - 1958 & 1964), the obverse and reverse of a 1975 Gold 1000 Piso coin and the logo of the PNAS.
