Just got this coin in the mail. I think it might be an example of FS-102. Unfortunately, much of the letter doubling runs in the same lines as Die Deterioration. As you can all see, the Die Deterioration on this coin is considerable, to the point of VLDS.

After examining the PCGS catalog for a long time, I am still unable to see the "doubled eyebrow" mentioned on BVC and VV. Therefore, I have been reduced to trying to decide whether there is a thick line under the nose or not. This is complicated because the first hubbing was much shallower, which probably doesn't look much different than Die Deterioration Doubling. Alas, no other official markers are photographed.

What do you think?

Edit: I think I just located the only listed marker.

Quote:
Die dot east of Jefferson's eye just before his hairline. The early die state is sharp and clear. Later die state specimens exist which were heavily polished giving a mushy appearance to the surface and doubling.

The dot appears on all three PCGS examples, too. It is way, way further east from the eye than I was looking!

Just to clarify why I was confused about the die dot: the eye image on Variety Vista shows some kind of circular mark just east of the eye. I thought the text (sans picture) on BVC was referring to that mark. So I was trying to match that mark against my coin and PCGS. In retrospect, it seems obvious now that the VV dot is just a little ding or surface mark. The real die dot marker is way outside the frame on the VV reference image.

Very nice catch! I can easily see it in the nose and also a little with the 2.

Thanks, makecents. =)

I did eventually figure out the double eyebrow. I had to put it side-by-side with a 1940 nickel to see that the sliver above the eyeball isn't there on other coins.

The doubled nose is easier to see after an acetone soak. Heavy die polishing is evident all along the profile. I think the chin could be easily interpreted as polishing, because the polishing probably just went right into the doubling along the edge. I almost wonder if they weren't trying to remove the doubling after noticing it.

Thanks, guys. =)

The pick was a long shot for twelve bucks, but I had high hopes. Quite pleased that it is a fair example of FS-102. It's a nice addition to my variety reference library.
