Hello, fellow coin fanatics. If anyone remembers any of my posts, I love Jefferson nickels, and nickels pretty much in general. I had completed my first set of them in a Dansco album awhile back, album 7114. It was fun to put together. I love how long it was, and that was for one only including business strikes.

I got another album for Christmas, 8113, which includes proof only issues. I have been working on this one little by little. Since they minted proofs before 1971 that were not proof only issues and since I already have the business strikes in another album, I have been filling in the older proofs in the corresponding business strike slots since there really is no indication of what has to go there technically.

However, recently, I came up with an idea to use either blank pages or a blank nickel album from Dansco, and basically build my own customized album. This way, I could put all the proofs, and all business strikes in the album, and organize them exactly how I want. Hell, I thought about going even further, and including both business strike mints and a circulated and BU coin for each one, and proofs. That might be a lot, though. Could be fun, though. I do have multiples of many Jeffersons, both in BU and circulated condition from bank roll hunting.

I am looking to potentially start at 1950 for proofs, since anywhere before that they cost a pretty penny. I think at those prices anyways they would probably remain better in a slab if I did opt to purchase them. From my understanding, there really only seems to be proofs minted in 38, 39, 40, and possibly 41 and 42? Not entirely sure. I know there seems to be a large gap after 42 I believe all the way up until 1950.

Only thing I really don't like about this notion is the fact that using blank pages may require adding in the dates and mint marks by hand, from per my OCD, I'm not a fan of. Lol. Perhaps I should invest in a label maker.

Any advice?

Correct. Jefferson nickel proofs were struck in cupronickel from 1938-1942. With the outbreak of World War II (or more specifically, the US involvement in WWII), proof strikes were suspended until 1950. Two types of 1942 proof exist, each minted with less than 30000 examples: the 1942 type 1 cupronickel proof (27600), and the 1942 type 2 War Nickel proof (29600). The War Nickel 35% silver proof is sought by many collectors, and in higher grades is pricey.

Your album sounds like a great idea, Humanist! And yes, a label maker sounds like the way to go. Check out the pages in this recent thread for an idea of what it could look like:

Adding circs is an interesting idea.

I'll wager that late-'70's and '80's era circs will be hard to find except all scratched up.

Using a label maker for the albums is a good idea - I don't like to 'hand wright the date on my albums. I use a process that turned out very nice. you can see in the following link:

Go for it!

I added a blank page to my 7113 to hold proof nickels. I did the same for my 7125 Roosevelt dimes. This happened when I finally decided to crack all my proof sets to fill proof holes in my other albums.
