For those that collect proof coins to go into albums, do you by the individual coin or do you just buy the proof set and break it up? Assuming you are collecting all the denominations

Both.

I started by breaking up all the proof sets I had, but I also had to fill some of the holes individually.

Now I get the annual sets every year to keep current.

I have quite a few but got them all from auctions. Which makes it harder when you are trying to fill albums. You might have to buy some you already have. And I should add there is nothing that I have bought that is older than the mid 50s in this way of going about it. And those are cents and nickels.

Bought earlier proof coins. Broke proof sets since 1972.

I will buy 2 sets - one to keep as OGP and the other to crack open to fill all my albums.

I also buy two sets. It ends up being less expensive, I get them immediately from the mint and I have control over the quality. If a set isn't perfect, it goes back to the mint. When I break them out, I'm really careful not to contaminate them. Others selling individual coins are not as careful.

I'm only really after small dollars for my albums. Native American, I buy individually; Innovation, I buy the set directly from the Mint and crack them out.

I just looked at the prices of the new proof sets...yikes. $40.25 for the standards S mint and $150 for the silver set and that doesn't include the Innovative Dollar sets. I see they are now doing a reverse proof too. I don't remember them being so high or that many variations. That quite a bit just to get one set to keep up, let alone two sets if you wanted to keep one in original mint holder. Yikes, that would be my whole budget just trying to keep up..lol

To be honest, I miss the days of just having one cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half dollar and dollar....not all these variations. I know they are just trying to create interest for people but that is quite a bit for a serious collector.

I enjoy all the variety today. But yes, sometimes I long for simpler days.

I'm collecting the Innovation Dollar Reverse Proof Sets. Was glad the Mint switched from selling singles (2018 - 2020) to the 4 coin sets in 2021. I stopped buying the Proof sets after 2023.

I am collecting both proof types and keeping them in a P&D Dansco. I was originally only buying the normal proof sets to break apart and keep in an album. I was only going to buy the reverse proof issues that interested me and keep them in the OGP. When they switched, I went back and bought all the reverse proof issues since they were still for sale by the Mint. Luckily all this happened before Dansco was able to produce any Innovation dollar albums, so I was able to buy one that suited my need.
