Hi,

I think I already know the answer to this question but I will ask anyway to be sure. I am looking to sell my 1895 O Gold Eagle $10 coin but I'm worried I should have it graded first. I know it is a key date and how much prices can soar depending on the grade.

However, based on my research I think I know the grade (AU) and the prices sold for this grade do not seem to vary that much whether slabbed or not slabbed. Again, I really do not want to screw myself so I wanted to ask the experts for your opinions first. Should I send it in to be graded and will it really make that much difference if I do?

My listing is ready to go and I was tempted just to throw it up on ebay for auction letting it go for what it's worth but again, if you think grading it will impact the value that much, I will definitely send it in.

Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks so much!

Best, Amy B.

Welcome to CCF. Your coin looks AU, likely cleaned and is a better date. As such I would just post it on ebay raw. This date usually sells for significant premiums in MS but your coin is not at that level.

It appears genuine and is 90% gold so it will likely bring $1,500 minimum on ebay. Of course your auction fees will come out of that but it's still a fair amount.

If you have the option of selling directly to a collector or bullion stacker you would realize more proceeds for yourself. Good luck!

Great! This is what I was hoping to hear and am happy to know I was correct on my thoughts about the grade. Interesting on the fact that it may have been cleaned as it is a family piece passed down so we known who had it at all times and I certainly never had it cleaned nor cleaned it myself. My grandmother kept it in her jewelry box her whole life and said it was something her mother did the same with. It was originally in a necklace mount so maybe it was cleaned then. Thanks again!

Looks like some rim damage from being in a bezel. That will probably reduce it to just a bullion coin value. Current melt value is $1468.

I'll guess AU details for the grade. If you want it slabbed, I'd go for it.

It has been damaged. If you send it in for grading it would get a
"details" grade at the best. Save the money and sell it as is.

I believe I would slab it if it were mine. TPG takes all the of the authenticity/grade out of the discussion when it sells. Fewer returns, too. Good luck!

The rim actually came out looking odd when I scanned it but that is an issue with my scanner and not the actual coin. I realize now I need better photos. Thanks to all for the advice.
