This piece and many like it, bearing the names of actual Civil War vets, began surfacing at flea markets about thirty years ago. While the names and ID info look to have been engraved, they were stamped on artificially-worn disks that resemble coins; typically, Liberty Seated halves and dollars. A book on these so-called Pender Disks was written some years ago. The CSA, really the CS, never issued these identification disks, a.k.a. "dog tags." 376093043576Yesterday, I wrote to the seller about this bogus listing. Not surprisingly, he hasn't responded.

Wow, thanks for the education, ExoGuy! The following article was the top result when I googled the auction title. Evidently the bidiots haven't taken the time to research this item. Fake Civil War identification discs The ebay auction images for posterity: 376093043576 - CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE CSA DOG TAG BELONGING TO ROBERT F. BUNTING 8TH TX CAVALRY

Take a look at the seller's other items. They all look a bit sketchy to me.

The history is interesting, and that's undoubtedly what's driving the price up; this, as is so with counterstamps. That said, this item is fake, so its historical connection is clearly contrived. There's zero provenance ....

I didn't report this auction because I want it to be a learning experience for the buyer. The seller should know better - definitely unscrupulous.

When I attempted to report this item, I was blocked .... "feature replaced." I saw no way to proceed. I'm guessing that, since ebay, Etsy and others are so inundated with fake stuff that their reporting system is overwhelmed. If I could somehow abandon my conscience, I'd put my entire black cabinet on ebay, play dumb and use the proceeds to take a world cruise.

It would have taken until the 1880's for an 1862 quarter to get this amount of wear.

Quote: It would have taken until the 1880's for an 1862 quarter to get this amount of wear. The so-called "wear" on these die-struck fakes is a telling aspect, given the identical appearance to all others; this, regardless of the rebel's name. BTW, this particular piece is more likely half dollar-sized as are most and not a quarter. Note that the seller lacks mentioning the coin's denomination, thereby leaving it to the buyer's imagination. As such, presumptive buyers may think the seller doesn't know what he really has. Ironically, the opposite is true, and the bidders lack the knowledge needed. The seller plays dumb. The price realized for this fake was $560 plus postage. Scores like this encourage more unscrupulous listings. Let's see if this seller posts more .....
