I wonder how much a low-grade S VDB would cost? Probably still hundreds.

Quote:I got a low-grade no D off of ebay for under $100. I've seen these also, but many times I think they are weak D's or someone just wore off the D off of a 1922 D. My example above was for a graded one. I wouldn't feel comfortable buying one raw. This is easy to fake and in low grade its hard to tell if its real or a strong reverse that the D was removed.

For any Lincoln Cent key date, I'd only pick one up at a reputable coin shop or coin show. Certified--even at a low grade--would be preferable. For semi-keys, I'd do the same. And for semi pieces, I'd only consider ebay if the seller had a long established track record of exemplary service/sales (including acceptance of returns)--and, the photos were absolutely clear and sharp. This system has worked for me--and know that I'm rather frugal so I'm not out buying everything. It takes time to acquire.

I just got a 1909-1958 Wheat penny dansco album. For the longest time it seemed like it was out of stock everywhere. I had my coins in a 1909-2009 album until recently

With the shield cents now, to me it makes more sense to split them up

I have done two 7100 albums, a high grade one and a circulated grade one. I am missing the 09-S VDB for the circulated set currently, maybe I will do it someday.
If you are doing a circulated set, the 09-S VDB is the expensive coin, $500 and up if not higher. 09-S, 14-D and 31-S will run you $100-200 in circulated grades. The 70-S Small Date is maybe $50. Everything else is pretty affordable if you stick to circulated coins.
For my high grade set, it became tough when I started doing pre-1934 coins, especially when you get into D and S mint coins from 1928 and earlier.
I'm not a 22 plain person, I don't think that is part of a date / mintmark set so I just plugged that hole.

I have collected all of the mint state issues (no errors) from 1930 through 2024 save one coin, and no it is not the usual suspect. I would never have imagined that a 1978-D would be the one coin I am missing. Each of these coins is graded, MS64 to MS68 and PF67 to PF70 as appropriate with the higher grades in more recent years. My 2nd to last purchase, which arrived last week, is this one (which just might be the usual suspect):

You can still actually put complete circulation Lincoln Memorial cent collections together from 1959-1982. The Zincolns are garbage though. I filled two albums from bank rolls with 1959-1982. All mints. If the legislation passes to get rid of the cent, this task will become more expensive.
