Looking for better opinion on my 1872 Shield nickel - as an amateur I suspect it may be a VP-011, although VP-001 on the NGCcoin site also lists a VP-001 in text only (no pic) which also describes my coin (I think) as well. Pics:
- obv
- rev
- obv annulet (this pic assisted me most in eliminating many other VP-xxx varieties - but maybe I was too hasty?
- obv left leaf 1 and left leaf 2
- obv left leaf 3
- obv right leaf 1 and right leaf 2
- vp-011 comparison
- vp-001 description

I have a few more pics (reverse machine damage? A fer obv diecracks) that I'll put in a second reply post...

OK, so after the experts have fun with the last post, please confirm these rev photos are simply MD and/or Longacre doubling (and not some new variety DDR!) and I just want to show a suspected die crack on the rev, and on the obv another suspected die crack as well as both the "N" and "S" appear to be grease struck. Thanks.

Looks like Longacre doubling to me.

Definitely a DDO. FS-101 is the closest comparison. Reverse is only Longacre doubling.

@Finn70 thanks. I originally was torn between the VP-006 (AKA FS-101) and the VP-011 (which seems to not have an FS designation), but eventually opted for the latter (VP-011) - based on the doubled die impression on my coin (above) the annulet seems to be repunched north-slightly west, while the VP-006/FS-101 (below) seems north-slightly east.

I don't really see any other distinguishing attributes to help me.

This one isn't listed in VarietyPlus. Certainly not a match to VP-011 as the die cracks across the annulet differ.

Using Spindel's Shield nickel Viewer, this one appears to be Spindel: S2-1000, Fletcher: F-111, CONECA: 20-O-IV.

Thank you @Tanman2001, I spent a ton of time looking at what seemed to be an unending number of Variety Plus FS's and VP's and never felt confident I nailed it. It's kind of good to know that it wasn't so much my lack of diagnostic skills as it was my lack of reference materials. I have the Shield nickel Viewer DEMO, and reached to Spindel about the full product. While it is a reasonable cost, my collection of 15-20 nickels, and the fact that these are not something I target or will expand on, I didn't pull the trigger and purchase it.
