Several years back, I posted about the Westward Journey Nickel Series that was issued to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (LCE) through the United States' newly-acquired Louisiana Territory. I included in that thread the Philatelic-Numismatic Covers (PNCs) that were issued by the US Mint (USM). (If interested, you can check the thread out here: 2004-2005 Westward Journey Nickels.)

I also posted on CCF's sister web site, Stamp Community Family, a set of 20 covers - the "Paul and Chris Calle's Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Collection" - that chronicle key milestones of the LCE journey. I very much like the artwork of the covers - full-color original illustrations by the father-son duo of Paul and Chris Calle - and was glad to see the Mint incorporate their artwork into its PNCs. (If interested, you can check the thread out here: Lewis And Clark Bicentennial Cover Collection.

While researching the efforts of the Calles, I learned of a "Historic Stamp and Coin Set" that included uncirculated examples of each of the Westward Journey nickels plus mint examples of the three US 2004 Lewis and Clark Bicentennial stamps, one stamp for the 150th Anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase (1953), one stamp for the 150th Anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1954) and the stamp issued for the 200th Anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase (2003). The attractive Set featured the artwork of Paul and Chris Calle, and tied in nicely to the covers I had purchased.

I set about to acquire one of the sets, but didn't like the $30 - $40 (or more) asking prices I was seeing. So, I added the Set to my "someday" list and waited patiently for a Set to become available for under $20. Patience paid off, and I was recently able to acquire a Set in "As New" condition for less than $20 - including shipping!

And here it is...

The Set includes a four-panel Stamp/Coin Folder with an outer slipcase. It borrows artwork from the aforementioned "Collection" (its first three covers) and includes brief historical information about the expedition, plus details about the coins and stamps included in the Set. Overall, I think it makes for an excellent educational set that can be enjoyed by collectors across a wide range of ages.

Very interesting set. FWIW, I did a quick search on ebay and see one for sale BIN at $64 shipped and no recently completed sales. $64 seems just a bit excessive for 5 nickels and a handful of stamps.

I really did enjoy the PNCs that commems mentioned earlier, and have the set purchased directly from the Mint. I'll try to find this "companion" set at a (much) better price.

I agree! That price point would be a non-starter for me!
