Greetings everyone

Some of you may have seen this Coin with my post in the "All Members, Post your most recent US Coin Purchase" forum and also read the story about how I aquired it. If you would like a more in-depth explanation of how this coin came to my possession you can read about it in that post. All I will state here is that it was given to me as an appreciation gift which I am still a bit in shock about seeing as this is a fairly rare and valuable quarter. so I would appreciate if you would like to give your estimate on a possible grade and your opinion on if I should get it Slabbed

I am going to guess at the grade as well and I'm going with VF-30?

I'll say VF for the grade.

It looks remarkably like the PCGS VF30 used as their plate coin on CoinFacts. In case you missed it you can save your money on regrading.

I am looking at the PCGS site and from what I am understanding there is only 1 variety for this date. The examples show the mintmark in a different position than the OP's coin. PCGS examples show the MM to the left of center while the OP's coin shows it as centered below the eagle. Also doesn't line up with the denticles. This coin doesn't look right to me and a mushy appearance too. compare op's coin to the link.

MisterT, per PCGS, there were two varieties, same obverse and two different reverses. The coin as noted is the PCGS VF30 plate coin. All of the dings and scratches on the obverse and reverse line up. The OP pics look intentionally smudged, especially around the date.

TeeEss, your post in the "post your new acquisitions" said the coin came in a plastic case. How about pics of the coin in the case.

Adam, thank you for some clarification regarding two different reverse dies. The link from PCGS doesn't mention that and only shows one variety listed. The three examples shown on the site all have the same MM orientation which differs from the OP's coin and that drew my concern. Not trying to start an argument here but this is a low mintage high value coin which alone makes it even more worthy of scrutiny. Some other members had posted examples of the MM orientation being the same as the OP's coin. I can accept that. My second concern is the overall mushiness and grainy appearance from the provided pictures. That draws a red flag for me. Add that to the last two digits of the date being much bolder than the first two. It just has a look that would give me concern. I would weigh and measure the diameter and thickness at a minimum if it were my coin. If I had the opportunity, I would have it XRF'd . I would want to be comfortable with the results before sending it to a TPG. The TPG's are more informed than I to confirm authenticity. I hope that this truly is authentic for the OP. I'm just expressing my observations which would concern me if it were mine. Do any member know where I can find the number of MM positions and die pairs used for a specific coin?

I'm on T's boat, suspect first and foremost because the provided images have been altered.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.
