For those less inclined towards technology, I wanted to share a quick reference technique that I use to look up examples on PCGS. Anytime you want to get a baseline of how a specific year or mintmark looks, you can access PCGS right from Google or your browser search bar.

Use the format: pcgs YYYY-MM (denomination)c (MS/PF/SMS) (CPG variety number)

For example: PCGS 1972 $1 MS FS-901
For example: PCGS 1956 5c PF
For example: PCGS 1942 5c MS FS-101

There is no case sensitivity to the search, it can be all lowercase.

Why not just save the pcgs site to favorites. Just open a second window, click your denomination and click whatever date you are looking for.

You can also click the following link for the PCGS photograde to match your coin to the photos.

It's an alternate method. Not all of us are clicking, many are tapping. Also, I personally just prefer to go straight to the information I want, instead of scrolling and navigating multiple web pages. If the traditional way works for you (as I'm sure it does for many folks) then no need to change.

For me specifically, these forums and ebay cause me to look at many different sorts of American coins in a very short time, so the search bar method has been a real time saver.

add -ai at the end, it tends to reduce some of the <redacted> results.

Good info, Brand! I like to use PCGS just because of their clear pics of high end coins and can download if necessary. I typically use this method to see what a "normal" coin should look like when checking out varieties. I have been had by this before though, because the specimen I looked up on PCGS was a variety in a normal slab.
