Could this have been a 1909 Lincoln Cent or 1919?

Much, much damage. Personally, I suspect it's not a 1909--given the posted images. Would love to examine the coin in-hand, holding it at different angles under different lighting.

Can you see what may or may not be VDB on the shoulder?

Unable to identify if VDB is evident.

Maybe a 1919? Who knows. It's too beat up to tell.

There's so much heavy damage, that third digit might originally have been a 4, for all we can tell.

Based on the spacing of the 9's, it can't be a 1909. Looks like a 1919.

That's a great candidate for the nearest railroad track to smooth out those blemishes.

I'd go with 1919, not that it matters though in that condition.

To me it looks like 1909. It looks like it has a mint mark, my opinion is an S. No VDB.
If it were 1919 it would have the obverse VDB, and when in this condition, I think you'd see it, that area on the design is fairly well protected. That third digit could be a 1, if that's true, then the fourth digit is a 0-7

Actually, it really does look more like a 1919, but I sure can't see the VDB in your pic

Just my humble opinion, but I think it's a 1919, given the number spacing.

Hummm...not worth the effort of figuring it out. But it would make an excellent sinker!
