I am curious what you all think of this coin--it is not my coin, so I have to go by the dealer's photos. I know the holder looks pretty beat up, but the second picture of the obverse also seems to show some hairlines--I think they are the coin itself. What do you think of this example in terms of how it should be graded? And what do you think about it overall as a coin?

Based on pictures, I'm thinking AU to low MS. If MS, I'm thinking MS-62.
AU is what I thought.

Well it is the small date plain variety which has a lower mintage than the large date cross 4 variety. That said there is a large price swing between AU-55 at $4200 and MS-60 at $20,000. There is some rub on the high points so MS is out of the question for me and the hairlines if on the coin may indicate a possible cleaning. Hard to tell with a scratched up holder. I'd be at mid AU and possibly AU details if it has in fact been cleaned. Melt value is $1460.

Looks like there is slight damage just above the eye (obverse) and a possible cleaning. I'd guess AU Details. That drops the value under $2k. If it straight graded AU then it goes over $2,500. I wouldn't expect it to bring $3k retail. As always ymmv.

My guess is MS-60 OGH no CAC. A holder that the coin will stay in forever.

Thanks everyone. Where do you see the wear that makes it AU in your eyes? Jacrispies--interesting assessment, why do you say 60 (with the implication that it doesn't really deserve MS)?

From the photos it looks cleaned. As to possible grade, there is a lot of chatter on Liberty's cheek and the fields on both obv and reverse have numerous rim dings. In addition something, unclear what, is on the reverse below the arrows. AU58 or so

It is always tough to assess coins from photos alone without seeing it in hand. The top two pics look totally different than the third pic. Here is a diagram of the high points on this coin. The areas where you should see wear first or break in luster. You decide.

A true AU58 should have only luster breaks on the high points and/or fields, "wear" may not be noticeable. This coin exhibits turbulence in the fields and has luster breaks across the high points. I think it's a high AU coin that has likely been cleaned. It still looks pretty good but not MS good imo. As always ymmv.

Sorry, I forgot to share the actual grade. PCGS called it MS(60). I thought it was strange because the surfaces didn't look that much more abraded than a 61/62. It seems that many of you think this is an AU coin, though.

Splitting hairs, but I'm in the AU58 camp.

If I were to be interested in buying it, (for which I am not), AU-58 would be the grade about which I would negotiate a price.
With those thoughts, I would expect to miss out, but at that level, OK by me.

Looks like a legitimate MS coin to me. Liberty's hair and the eagle's feathers appear to have intact mint frost, with no obvious rub. Some slight muting of luster in the fields, not incompatible with a mint state grade. Contact marks would limit it to a 62. A very appealing $10 Liberty I'd be proud to own!
