I have considered starting a collection of graded coins but every time I do something always sets of my OCD and then I put it on the back burner This topic is for discussing everything about the graded slab process that drives you crazy except for the coins The "Buy the slab for the coin, not for the label" comments are not necessary I already have 2 sets of coins that are not in slabs, and some of which were jail broke from slabs, so this topic is just for people to rant about the inconsistencies in the process that bugs them My Ideal Collection would be comprised of about 20 of my favorite or special coins graded as NGC PF-70s with the Standard Brown Label But every time I start shopping, certain "aspects" of the grading process start to set off my OCD Here are a few examples of things the bug me 1 - They would all have to be from the same company - probably NGC 2 - Most of the coins I want a pretty current so finding 70s is pretty easy until I go looking for a 1976 Ike Proof, then the best I can find is a 69 3 - Incorrectly "clocked" coins - You find the perfect graded coin with the right label from the right company but the coin isn't clocked right 5 - The PF and PR thing doesn't really bug me but WHY does that issue exist? 6 - NGC Label inconsistencies - Scales - Pictures - most are brown but then you get Red or Blue every once in a while 7 - You find the perfect graded coin with the right label from the right company but the holder is all scratched up That's about all I can think of for now but I'm sure some of you will post your pet peeves and that will give me more to be tortured by if I go forward with this collection Edited by Boba Debt 04/10/2025 3:20 pm

I know a guy who has a huge slab collection. With his approval I'm posting a pic of it here. :)

Quote: 1 - They would all have to be from the same company - probably NGC I started my Ike set as a PCGS an NGC mix because my first two were one of each. I settled on a PCGS set when I found the third coin at a show. It just as easily could have been an NGC set, although I have come to like the PCGS holders more. A NGC set is still a possibility. Quote: 2 - Most of the coins I want a pretty current so finding 70s is pretty easy until I go looking for a 1976 Ike Proof, then the best I can find is a 69 My Ike set runs between 63 and 69. All the proofs are 69DCAM, except one variety—68DCAM—which was a gift. For the business strikes, only one is 63, and three are 64. The rest are 65 and up. Quote: 3 - Incorrectly "clocked" coins - You find the perfect graded coin with the right label from the right company but the coin isn't clocked right You can get them to rotate with some effort. Difficult to describe, but there are a few videos on YouTube. Quote: 5 - The PF and PR thing doesn't really bug me but WHY does that issue exist? It is odd. No idea why they cannot agree. Quote: 6 - NGC Label inconsistencies - Scales - Pictures - most are brown but then you get Red or Blue every once in a while Well, there is PCGS. Quote: 7 - You find the perfect graded coin with the right label from the right company but the holder is all scratched up Yup. Just have to shake it off and keep looking.

You're better off sticking with a 69 that looks flawless to the naked eye.

Thanks for the input J Quote: Or simply have it re-slabbed. Re-slabbed? That's a thing? Quote: You're better off sticking with a 69 that looks flawless to the naked eye. I thought a lot about this tonight at work and decided to go with PF-69 because there are a few coins that I want that are ridiculous when graded 70

I joined NGC and started to do some "browsing" I selected the Free membership since I'm just starting this collection but next January I'll upgrade to Premium for $159 since you get a $150 credit for doing that They have a service known as "reholders" I guess that is the same as reslabing? For $15 NGC will replace the slab and the label, with the style and information format that you prefer, which seems like a decent deal Apparently they do not re-grade the coin as long as there is no obvious change to the original grade This means I can looks for deals on some of the more expensive cons that I want that have slab related issues I already started last night and in honor of you Buck, I went with a PF69 Cameo 1971-S Ike which I got for $30 and I also found a 2020-W Reverse Proof Nickel My plan is to spend about a hundred dollars per month getting the less expensive coins before I move up to the wallet busters such as the 1995-W or 2019-S ERP ASEs It's not going to be a large collection since it will be mostly unique or rare coins and will probably fit in an NGC 20 slab box but you never know

One thing that sets my OCD off is that they put the Lincoln Shield cents with the shield facing the front. So if someone wanted to get the 2017-P Lincoln with the only P mint mark in the series, they wouldn't even be able to see it. That would be fine for a Type set but if someone (not me) was putting together a set with all the dates, they would have a bunch of shields staring at them and not be able to see the dates. It's fine for the ones that have different special designs like the Bicentennial cents, Westward Jefferson nickels and State Quarters and their other series.

That bugs me too Speaking of Lincoln cents, I want to get a 2019-W RP for the box I already have one in my CAPS Binder but I also wanted a graded slab but I have mixed feelings about the copper clad zinc pennies Have you noticed any issues with your graded zinc pennies?

Have you noticed any issues with your graded zinc pennies? Someone else will have to chime in since I just bid and won my 1st graded slabbed coin yesterday I went with PCGS. Now I have 10 or so I have bids on now...so the addiction is real Of course I had to get a PF70DCAM as my first proof for the SBA set, so I set the bar high. Now my OCD will be to do all the proofs in that grade. At least I picked a short set as my first to do. The other ones I'm bidding on are just random coins, pennies and nickels for the designs that are cheap to see if I get them, so if I get outbid it's not the end of the world. I have a Kennedy and an Ike in there too but I'm sure I'll get outbid on those.

Quote: I already have one in my CAPS Binder but I also wanted a graded slab but I have mixed feelings about the copper clad zinc pennies I forgot to mention, I'm going to be using the CAPS Albums too but their already printed specific ones. That's another OCD problem since the SBA is part of their Sacagawea Album. So if I do a slabbed set of SBA I'll have empty spaces staring at me.
