Hi,

is there something that happens on die breaks that can cause what looks like doubling of the denticals on the opposite side of the break?

That's a nice Cud.

The "doubling" on the denticles is probably MD. Nickels are well known for MD because of the hardness of the metal.
Directly opposite a Cud, on the other face, can sometimes show weakness to the devices (design). This effect is from extra metal flowing to into the Cud instead of the design as intended.

It would be similar to the Blakesley effect on
a clipped planchet. Caused by lack of metal.

There is no doubling, but rather weakness in the strike as mentioned above. With the chasm of the Cud filling with metal when struck, there is not enough material to fully define the dentils on the other side.
