Hello I'm new to this. Going through some coins left to me and was wondering if this is an error. Its missing letters and wondering the value?

Your coin is pretty worn from circulation, so the letters are partially missing from circulation wear.

Yes, this coin has seen much, much wear over many years of circulation. As such, lettering very close to the rims begins to 'disappear'. If coins could talk. In terms of value (because of its age and much circulation wear, including scratches on the reverse), this Wheat cent would fall in the 10-20 cent range.

Heavily circulated but still a 1917-S is a pretty collectable Wheat cent.
