Looks like it's stained. Try soaking it in distilled water or acetone to see if it comes off.

Hondo; All the stained spots are low spots. Wondering - would some sort of acid do that.

is that flat portion raised? - it looks like solder on top of the head to me.

It's some kind of crud on your coin. It's not an error.
Errers and Varietys.

No, I don't think so. Looks to me to be the height of where an undamaged head would be. Guess it's probably one of those things which may not be able to be determined with pics! Been trying to study it - the flat spot appears to be a very worn head.

E&V Yes, there is some crud, but something else is definitely going on - may just be PMD. Think I'll take Hondo's suggestion and get some acetone to clean it up. If pic's can show anything after cleaning, maybe I'll repost. Thank You, everyone!

Whatever caused this, it did not leave the mint that way. It's a damaged coin.
Take a look at my other hobby ... https://www.jk-dk.artToo many hobbies .... too much work .... not enough time.

Quote: Guess it's probably one of those things which may not be able to be determined with pics! That is true for a lot of coins. you have it in hand and can see much more than we can. How about an edge on image? (across the Head area so we can see how thick it is where that flat area is.)

I agree that it is probably a stain. Since you are willing to experiment, let us know how acetone affected it. Otherwise, it is just damage and has no additional value.

It looks like during the minting process another nickel fell on top of this one somehow and smushed the head flat. You can see a date of a coin by the head. If this even happened at the mint, it could also be people messing around with coins and kilns

It has all of the looks of a coin that has lain on a wet surface. It's just stained - probably permanently.
