The only flaw I see in that theory (hammered), is that there really isn't any damage on the reverse.
On the counterstamp penny I posted, it had damage on the reverse.

Don't know! Guess I'll just keep it as an oddity.

Looks like solder to me. The staining is from the flux they used to solder it.
