Hello all,
I've been asked to help liquidate a collection of certified US coins. I'd guess individual coins are worth from $1000 to $30,000 each. Total value should exceed $200K.

Can anyone report on their positive results from selling through Heritage, Great Collections, Stack's, etc.? I'd really appreciate hearing from experienced sellers.

Thanks!

I've sold over $50K worth of PCGS certified US coins through Great Collections.

Had a great sellers experience - was satisfied with the auction photos, prices realized at auction and was paid in a reasonable amount of time (Net 30 as I recall).

Best of all I paid zero sellers fees for any of the coins that sold for over $1000, which was the majority of them.

Take a look at my other hobby ... https://www.jk-dk.art
Too many hobbies .... too much work .... not enough time.

While I haven't sold anything yet, I have noticed in my research that Heritage tends to get higher results than Stacks for similar coins. I'd be curious to see what others think and, of course, check them out and see for yourself. Good luck!

Jaobler, I Appreciate the position you have been selected for , People Obviously have trust in Your decisions. Sounds Exciting. I am in the position of tallying up a spreadsheet of My collections. I am discussing with an Auction house also.

I Too am seeking to have My collection, A Large portion, Auctioned off , I am excited for You, You have a large Numismatic responsibility to acquire the Largest audience Possible to reach the Highest Prices for The Collectibles you seeking to sell. Having options are nice, Nicklesearcher stated no Sellers fees on coins over a thousand dollars, Fees stack up quickly in/on Auctions. We can Only Hope to capture the Largest Audience, You Should also look at Who Will achieve that same goal for You, Many auction houses will gladly take on selling Your Collectibiles, Your goal is Very obtainable .

Your job is to Secure the Best audience possible, The Highest prices paid, Along with Options that in the end, Will bring you the Best paid to you prices. I will be watching please keep us in the loop, Remember, Your the Newest ward for the collectibles your in charge of, Some of these " coins " have Not seen the light of day for others and The beauty of such " coins " are waiting to be seen by the coin collecting World, Best wishes, Hope this helps, MD.

So far I've contacted Heritage and Great Collections; both companies are interested. GC has estimated a slightly higher value for the set. My initial estimate for total value is looking a bit optimistic. Maximum total proceeds is likely to be closer to $140K.

Both companies say they would evaluate the coins for upgrade potential and possibility for CAC approvals. Any coins that upgrade or sticker could obviously attract higher bids.

I will discuss seller's fees with both companies. Obviously I'd prefer to minimize those fees and the firm with the lower cost will have an edge when it comes time to make our decision.

Seller's fees might be secondary considering Heritage Buyer's Premiums are essentially double what Great Collections charges. You'd need over 100% of the hammer price at ha.com assuming GC sells them for close to the same value total value. Just something to consider.

I noticed the values you mentioned. Perhaps you have common gold coins there? Beware of selling gold coins at auctions if the metal price has reached the numismatic value.
Any auction fees will make auctioning worse than selling them for melt value. I am seeing that here in Europe happening to common gold coins 100 to 200 years old.

There were lots of generic gold and silver coins which I sold for melt+. The potential auction lots are PCGS and NGC certified collector coins. Two of the best are an 1889-CC double eagle in MS-62 and an 1856 Flying Eagle cent in PR-63.

I decided to try Great Collections. I agree that the lower buyer's fees at GC might translate to better total proceeds. Most of the coins should sell for over $1000 so they won't incur a seller's fee. Also, I'm close enough to GC to hand-deliver the coins, rather than having to ship them.

I'll update this thread as things develop.
