Need some experts to grade this 1904-S Barber Half. It appears to me as a VG-10 but I'm afraid of the scratches around Liberty's collar. What do you think?   |

Agree with VG10 range for the grade, original surfaces. I think those scratches are minor enough given the wear for the coin to straight grade.
Please edit your topic title to include the mint (1904-S).

If a TPG detailed that they would deserve a head slap - totally straight/original. But, nothing but inconsistency reigns in that world. I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins. To me, the obverse is a little better than VG-10 but the reverse is weaker, so VG-10 net looks right for this one. The reverse suggests an old cleaning, market acceptable. The obverse scratches are typical for a VG coin, and should not detail it. I think that if the coin graded VF or higher of if the scratches were intentional, such as graffiti, they would detail the coin. There is a decent circulation cameo on it, too.

Here is some NGC fodder to digest. Both on GC this past Sunday. 1899 Qtr tagged as details for scratches - little bit worse than above but IMO, questionable grade  And here is 46 Roosie at MS65 - look at that Rev, are you friggin' joking NGC? I agree it should straight grade. VG10 sounds about right.

I think the odds are high of a details grade. This example shows many pockmarks on the obverse. Considering the scratches as well, I would say the odds are higher than 50%.
If it happens to straight grade, I could see a net grade as a result.
